Jamali asks for feasibility of Khojak Tunnel


ISLAMABAD, May 6: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has directed that a committee comprising representatives of NHA, government of Balochistan and ministry of railways be constituted to determine the feasibility of the Khojak Tunnel in Balochistan to reduce the travelling distances by rail and road.

The committee would submit its report by the end of this month. He was attending a presentation on Khojak Tunnel by the Chairman, NHA at the Prime Minister's Secretariat on Thursday.

He said, that the Government was striving to revamp the network of roads and highways in the country to accelerate the pace of socio-economic development. The National Highway Authority made a detailed presentation on its communication network improvement programme.

The prime minister was informed that the coastal highway from Karachi to Gwadar would be opened to traffic in September this year. The prime minister was also informed that the NHA, under its network improvement programme, has undertaken a large number of projects in all the four provinces for construction, repair and rehabilitation of roads and highways in the country.

The prime minister, while appreciating the good work done by the NHA directed that the authority should further intensify its efforts to construct link roads to provide better access in remote and far-flung areas.

He directed that emphasis be laid on those areas, which had been neglected in the past. The prime minister also instructed that efforts be undertaken for improving the railway track from Karachi to Chamman. -APP
