ISLAMABAD, May 5: Interior Minister Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat has said the law enforcement agencies have seized over Rs12.8 billion worth of drugs during the last five years.
The minister said 20.85 metric tons of opium worth Rs346.95 million, 4,754 metric tons of heroin (Rs11.4 billion) and 202.48 metric tons of hashish (Rs1.07 billion) were seized.
In a written reply to a question raised by Gulshan Saeed in the Senate, the minister provided complete details of the seizures. The minister said in the year 1999, the law enforcement agencies seized 7,662.74 kg opium worth Rs36.78 million, 2,143.84 kg of heroin worth Rs171.5 million and 25,546.56 kg hashish worth Rs89.41 million.
In 1999, the value of opium per kg was Rs4,800, heroin per kg was Rs80,000 and the value of hashish per kg was Rs3,500. He said in 2000, law enforcement agencies had seized 4,241.86 kg of opium worth Rs21.2 million, 4,908.02 kg of heroin worth Rs392.64 million and 36,742.62 kg of hashish worth Rs146.97 million.
In 2000, the value of opium per kg was Rs5,000, heroin per kg was Rs80,000 and hashish per kg was valued at Rs4,000.Mr Hayat said narcotics seized in 2001 included over 2,626 kg of opium worth Rs26.26 million, 3,068.16 kg of heroin worth Rs245.45 million and 29938.87 kg of hashish worth Rs194.6 million.
In the year of 2001 the value of opium per kg was Rs10,000, heroin per kg was Rs80,000 and hashish per kg valued at Rs6,500.
The minister said in 2002, the law enforcement agencies seized 926.97 kg of opium worth Rs27.80 million, 4,368.5 kg of heroin worth Rs1,048.44 million and 22,638.5 kg of hashish worth Rs203.74 million.
Opium in 2002 was worth Rs30,000 per kg, heroin, Rs240,000 per kg and hashish, Rs9,000 per kg.
The minister said in 2003, 55,395.9 kg of opium worth Rs234.89 million was seized, whereas 33,060.66 kg of heroin worth Rs9,587.59 million and 87,618.37 kg of hashish worth Rs438.09 million was seized.
In 2003, the value of opium per kg was Rs25,000, heroin per kg was valued at Rs290,000 and hashish was Rs5,000 per kg.
passports stolen: Interior Minister Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat has said 21,741 blank passports booklets were either stolen or robbed during the last five years from 13 offices in various parts of the country.
In a written reply to a question raised by Gulshan Saeed in the Senate on Tuesday, the minister provided details of the stolen and robbed passports.
He said 2,644 passports were either stolen or robbed in the year 1999.
As many as 500 passports were stolen from the political agent Mohmand Agency in April 1999; 184 were stolen from regional passport office Muzaffarabad on 12 April 1999 and 1960 passports were stolen from D.I. Khan on 18 August 1999.
The minister said 5,487 passports were either stolen or robbed in the year 2000. He said 1,121 passports were stolen from Sialkot on February 17, 2000; 2,206 were stolen from Quetta on March 17, 2000, while 2,160 passports were stolen from Abbottabad on June 18, 2000.
Mr Hayat said 5,117 passports were either stolen or robbed in the year 2001. He said 2,117 passports were stolen from Multan office on June 17, 2001; 1,000 were stolen during transit to Gujranwala on September 1, 2001, and 2,000 passports were stolen from Railway authorities, Peshawar, on December 31, 2001.
