KARACHI: Power cuts cause water shortage in many areas

KARACHI, May 5: Various parts of the city either went without water or received scant supply on Wednesday, adding miseries to the residents of the affected localities in the prevailing hot and sultry weather.
The hard-hit localities included Clifton's blocks 2, 3, 4 and 5, Kalri Village, Shireen Jinnah Colony, parts of Boat Basin area, Kharadar's Taj Mohammad Street, parts of Jutland Lines, Federal B Area's blocks 6, 10 and 14, Gulshan-i-Iqbal's block 2, Baldia and Site (both residential and industrial areas).
An official of the KWSB attributed water shortage in Clifton and adjoining areas to the Tuesday's prolonged power breakdown at the locality's pumping station. People residing in multi-storey buildings complained that though the water supply to their area continued, they were unable to pump the water to their overhead tanks due to the frequent power breakdowns.
Most of such complaints were received from Gulshan-i-Iqbal's Hassan Square Apartments, Cosy Homes, Civic View Apartments, etc. Complaints of persisting water shortage were also received from the residents and nazims of Baldia and Site towns.
Baldia Town's Nazim Aurangzeb Khan pointed out that although water crisis in both the towns, particularly in his town, was lingering on for the past three years, the KWSB had not yet been able to resolve the issue despite a number of complaints having been lodged with the utility.
MQM CONCERNED: Muttahida Qaumi Movement's coordination committee convener Dr Imran Farooq has expressed concern over persisting water shortage in certain areas of the city.
Referring to a press report suggesting that water supply from Keenjhar Lake might be suspended, he criticized the officials of the irrigation department for not properly monitoring the water level in the lake.
He said that the persisting water shortage was, on the one hand, causing hardship to the citizens and, on the other, badly affecting industrial progress in the metropolis.
The MQM leader demanded of the government to immediately direct the officials concerned to ensure that the lake's water level was maintained up to 54 feet to avoid the impending crisis.
