Pensioners to file review petition

By Our Reporter

LAHORE, May 4: The Pakistan Federation of Civil and Military Associations has decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court against the dismissal of appeal for removal of disparity between the pension of old and new pensioners by it and appealed to the president to consider the demand on humanitarian grounds.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the association held here on Tuesday with Lt-Gen Dr Ghulam Safdar Butt (retired) in the chair. The participants regretted that no relief was announced for the pensioners in the forthcoming budget despite the fact that they were equally affected by price hike.

The pensioners were of the view that increase of Rs4,000 to Rs5,000 in the salaries of sessions and civil judges through the National Finance Commission Award showed that the government was sympathetic towards the serving personnel but had no soft corner for the retired people.

They said president's statement that raise in salaries was necessary for prevention of corruption was appreciable but he must also consider the increase in pension for saving the sick and old pensioners from a pathetic life. Keeping in view its financial limitations, the government could provide relief to the pensioners in phases, starting from the pensioners of over 70 years of age.
