KARACHI, May 4: Presence of an upcountry bound bus terminus and frequent movement of tankers on main University Road have become a major source of traffic jam on either side of the road, particularly near Edhi centre and Busy Bee Restaurant.
A visit to the University Road would show that flow of traffic at these spots comes to a halt whenever drivers of the upcountry bound buses manoeuvre to park their vehicles on open space lying between the footpath and the main University Road.
Drivers of the upcountry-bound buses not only create obstacles in the flow of traffic on main University Road, but they also cause damage to the nearby storm-water drain as most of them usually remain parked on it.
Since servicing of these vehicles is also undertaken at the unauthorized terminus, all sorts of oily and greasy material is dumped in the nearby storm-water drain, and as such the storm- water drain often gets choked and filthy water starts overflowing on the main road.
Dirty water overflowing from the storm-water drain not only creates hindrance in the flow of traffic, but also presents an ugly sight to the passers by. As a number of booking offices of the upcountry-bound buses have sprung up on the adjacent footpath, pedestrians and commuters can be seen walking and standing on the first track of road amid vehicular traffic.
Similarly, tankers drawing water from the LSR hydrant, situated behind Civic Centre, have become a major source of creating hindrance in the smooth flow of traffic moving on either side of the University Road (ie from Hassan Square traffic intersection to Jail Chowrangi).
A number of accidents, involving tankers and motorcycles have already occurred in the vicinity of the office of Gulshan Town administration. Tankers drawing water from the LSR hydrant have ruined a major road near Mashrique Centre and are nowadays devastating two other streets situated adjacent to the CDGK's parking lot and in the vicinity of offices of Gulshan Town administration.
Although people residing in the adjacent block of Gulshan-i- Iqbal and those living in apartment buildings near the offices of the city government's revenue department's executive district officer, have repeatedly demanded of the CDGK to shift the hydrant to some other place and also to reconstruct the devastated road, their requests have, so far, remained unheeded.
