40 PML-N activists arrested in raids

By Ashraf Mumtaz

LAHORE, May 2: Police are reported to have arrested over 40 PML-N leaders and workers and raided residences of many others as the ARD said on Sunday that all components of the alliance would jointly receive Mian Shahbaz Sharif on his return to Pakistan.

The alliance leaders discussed the matter at an emergency meeting held under the chairmanship of Makhdoom Amin Fahim. Punjab PML-N information secretary Zaeem Qadri said Mian Shahbaz would hold a news conference in London on Monday to make his schedule public.

Fed up with the repeated queries, one leader said: "It's like tracing 'Lailatul Qadr'." He said the Saudi government was also in contact with Mian Shahbaz and the latter would take a final decision in accordance with the Saudi advice.

According to a party press release, police raided the residence of PML-N leaders and workers in Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Sialkot and Mandi Bahauddin on Sunday.

Leaders, whose houses were raided, included Binyamin Rizvi, Haji Haneef, Mushtaq Ahmed, Dr Asad Ashraf, Rana Ijaz Hafeez, Painter Imran and Islam. PML-N sources said that Rana Nisar (in Shahdara), Dilshad Shah, Sheikh Iftikhar (Lohari), Usman Butt (Lower Mall), Imran Ashraf (Shalimar) had been arrested.
