Labour Day observed

ISLAMABAD, May 1: The workers' community on Saturday observed the May Day across the country to pay homage to the workers of Chicago for defending their rights.

The workers organized seminars, conferences and symposiums to highlight problems of the labour community and ways and means to establish a cordial relationship between the employers and the employees for the country's socio-economic development.

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, labour organizations and workers' unions observed the day by highlighting the history of their struggle and achievements.

A number of trade union, lawyer and labour leaders highlighted the importance of the day.

The day was observed to mark the historic struggle of those who laid down their lives while defending the rights of workers 118 years ago.

A number of labourers were killed at Haymarket, Chicago, in May 1886 while demanding an eight-hour working day.

The day was also observed in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.-APP
