ISLAMABAD, April 24: The opposition Democratic Alliance has decided to take up the issues of Kargil war and Hamoodur Rehman Commission report in the Senate for an open debate, sources told Dawn here on Saturday.

The sources said the members of the Democratic Alliance, comprising the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) and nationalist parties, had prepared some notices and resolutions to be submitted to the Senate Secretariat seeking a general debate on the Kargil issue.

They said the opposition was considering an option to move a resolution in the Senate seeking formation of an inquiry commission on the pattern of India to probe into the events of Kargil episode. The opposition, they said, wanted to raise the issue as it believed that it was the right of the people to know about the architects of the Kargil plan.

The question had become more important particularly after the Nawaz government denied that it was taken into confidence before launching the operation, they added.

Moreover, they said, there were contradictory reports regarding casualties in the operation and the nation was still in the dark regarding the facts and figures.

Similarly, the sources said, the opposition would ask the government to bring Hamoodur Rehman Commission report on the East Pakistan tragedy to parliament so that people knew who were really responsible for the fall of Dhaka.

When contacted for comments, ARD parliamentary secretary Izhar Amrohvi said the opposition had a very heavy agenda for the next Senate session, which had been requisitioned by it. He said the Kargil issue would definitely be raised in the Senate and the opposition had already chalked out a strategy for the purpose.
