KARACHI: Shortage of UTS buses perturbs nazim

KARACHI, April 22: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan has taken serious note of public complaints about irregularities in the green buses and others being plied under the Urban Transport Scheme.

A meeting held to review performance of UTS buses and hardships being faced by operators was held on the directives of nazim under the chairmanship of EDO (Transport) Dr Tahir Soomro here at Civic Centre on Thursday.

Among others, the meeting was attended by DO Public Transport and Management Operation Muhammad Athar, Karachi Green Bus Company representatives, a delegation of Chinese experts and other city government officials.

It was decided that all the buses being plied under the UTS would follow its conditions, rules and regulations. According to the agreement, these buses will arrive at fixed points at fixed time so that citizens may not face any difficulty.

The companies and transporters will ply a fixed number of buses and the out-of- order buses will be repaired without any delay so that passengers will not have to face problems. EDO Transport Tahir Soomro said that the UTS was in the interest of the masses. The city government, he said, was desirous of bringing more buses on roads so that visible improvement in transport system could be made.

He observed that with the improvement in law and order condition, foreign investors had started showing interest in investment in the transport scheme. Tahir Soomro directed the Karachi Green Bus Company to enhance its service standard and brief the nazim over its performance.

Representatives of Karachi Green Bus Company assured that 26 buses would be plied in the city. In case of any fault in the buses, the same would be immediately rectified, they added. -PPI
