KARACHI: Govt explains steps for promotion of Urdu

KARACHI, April 21: The government is fully conscious of its obligations regarding introduction of Urdu and is taking all necessary steps in this regard. This was stated in the comments filed by Cabinet division before a division bench of Sindh High Court on Wednesday.

The bench is seized with the hearing of a constitution petition seeking implementation of Urdu as an official language filed by Tahseen Ahmed, a resident of Taluka Digri, Sindh.

"The National Language Authority was set up in 1979 in pursuance of Article 251 of the Constitution," the comments stated, adding "a nine-member cabinet sub-committee was also set up to monitor the progress".

Earlier, Deputy Attorney General Syed Zaki Mohammad and additional advocate-general, Sindh, Ahmed Pirzada submitted the comments. The petitioner requested time for going through the comments at which the bench put off hearing. -APP
