Rain delays start of first ODI

GEORGETOWN, April 18: England have named veteran paceman Darren Gough in their team to face West Indies in Sunday's first One-day International, due to begin at 1pm local time (1700GMT).

Gough, who has retired from Test cricket, joined Steve Harmison, James Kirtley and Andrew Flintoff in an all-seam attack after England left out spinner Ashley Giles. Captain Michael Vaughan won the toss and put the West Indies in. When England bat later in the day Vaughan will open the innings for the first time in a One-day International.

West Indies left Ian Bradshaw out of their team, handing a One-day International debut to Dwayne Bravo. After heavy rain over the last few days the match has been cut to 30-overs a side.

The capital, where the Bourda Oval is located, had been badly hit by rain in recent days and forced the cancellation of England's only preparatory match on Friday against Shivnarine Chanderpaul's Guyana side.

Ground staff worked diligently to complete mopping up operations and an army helicopter, ordered by the country's president Bharat Jagdeo, assisted with drying the ground, as the sun peeped out.

Umpires Eddie Nicholls and Aleem Dar twice inspected the ground to examine three areas of the field that concerned them most. The areas were immediately in front of the two sight screens and in front of the Georgetown Cricket Club Pavilion.

In the event there is further rain to prevent the match being completed on Sunday, a reserve day remains scheduled for Monday.

Teams:

West Indies: Ramnaresh Sarwan (captain), Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Smith, Ricardo Powell, Sylvester Joseph, Dwayne Bravo, Ridley Jacobs, Ravi Rampaul, Merv Dillon, Corey Collymore.

England: Michael Vaughan (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Ian Blackwell, Rikki Clarke, Chris Read, Darren Gough, Steve Harmison, James Kirtley. -Agencies
