KARACHI: Ibad pledges to make city people-friendly
KARACHI, April 18: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has pledged to make Karachi people-friendly city whereby everybody without any discrimination would get better facilities.
The governor was talking to a women delegation
, which called on him along with Federal Adviser for Women Welfare Neelofar Bakhtiar, at Governor House here on Saturday evening.
Provincial Minister Dr Saeeda Malik, Begum Salma Ahmed, Salma Murad, Dr Sultana Ibrahim, representatives of various women welfare organizations and Principal Secretary Brig (Retd) Akhtar Zamin were present on the occasion.
Dr Ibad issued directives to the authorities concerned for declaring Karachi people-friendly city. He called upon the NGOs to make collective efforts towards this very objective. He said that government's all possible efforts were continuing to ensure respect and due status for women at every level in society.
The governor also informed the delegation about the efforts being made for elimination of karo-kari. He pointed out that karo-kari was considered as an act of goodness and justice in the past, but with the continuous efforts of government and NGOs it was now being identified as an evil and an abhorred custom.
He said the government would provide every facility to women welfare organizations to ensure that women are no more subjected to injustice and oppression.
Dr Ibad said that for guidance of women there should be a complete programme, including legal aid as well as relief and rehabilitation of the victims, in order to ensure that after provision of relief they may not keep wandering here and there.
WATER SUPPLY: Dr Ishratul Ibad, in another meeting at Governor House, directed Badin Nazim to immediately inform him about the water supply position in the district.
The governor issued directives to restore the supply of water to Badin within 24 hours and said that even if there was any impediment in the way it should be communicated to him.
The meeting also reviewed the provision of relief in the wake of rain devastations in Badin and Thatta districts. He directed the officials concerned that payment of compensation to owners of completely destroyed houses must be started within 10 days.
He also issued instructions for immediate repair of culverts and bridges in Badin and Thatta districts on priority basis, besides strengthening of damaged banks of canals within two months. For this purpose, he ordered that the finance department should release Rs28 million within 10 days. -APP
