PESHAWAR: Peshawar police chief replaced

By Shafiq Ahmad

PESHAWAR, April 17: The NWFP government has replaced the chief of Capital City Police and transferred five other senior officials after the two missiles attacks in Peshawar within a month, sources told Dawn here on Saturday.

Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani had convened a meeting of senior officials on Thursday night after the latest missiles attack and admonished the police high-ups for their failure to maintain law and order in the city.

He held the police responsible for not taking any preventive measure despite the defence ministry warning issued a week ago about another terrorists' attack on the major installations in the province, particularly in Peshawar, the sources said.

According to the NWFP establishment and administration department notification issued on Saturday, Masud Ahmad Paracha (BS-20), DIG investigation, has been transferred and posted as chief of Capital City Police in place of Tanvir-ul-Haq Sipra (BP- 20), who has been posted in his place.

Attaullah Wazir (BS-19), who was waiting for posting, was posted as DIG Malakand division in place of Faqir Hussain (BS- 20), who has been posted against the vacant post of commandant Frontier Reserve Police.

Abdul Wadood Shah (BS-20), who was waiting for order, was posted as DIG Enquiry and Investigation at Central Police Office in place of Mian Baz Afridi, who was asked to report to the federal establishment and administration division.

According to some other sources, Tanvir-ul-Haq Sipra was transferred because of his uncompromising stance against the chief minister trespassing in the transfers and postings affairs of low-rank officials.

They said that Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani and some MPAs and an MNA of the Muttahida Majilis-i-Amal wanted to get some of their blue-eyed boys posted as SHOs at valued police stations of their own choice.

"But all the time Mr Sipra, the former CCCP, refused to accept the directives from the Frontier House," the sources maintained.

The chief minister wanted to appoint SHOs Gulab Khan and Fazal Mohammad to the Matani and Pishtakhara police stations respectively, but Mr Sipra refused to give in to the pressures of the high officials, the sources said.

They added that an MMA MNA Sabir Hussain Awan, famed for pulling down signboards, and NWFP Law Minister Malik Zafar Azam, a green card-holder, also requested the former CCCP for the postings of two other SHOs to the priced police stations. "But Sipra again turned down their request," they said.
