Body formed to draft PML constitution: Reunification committee meets

ISLAMABAD, April 13: The reunification committee of four Pakistan Muslim League (PML) factions and Imtiaz Sheikh's Sindh Democratic Alliance here on Tuesday decided to go ahead with their plans to prepare a consensus constitution , and appointed a committee for the purpose.

A meeting of the factional leaders with party president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in the chair was held at the residence of Hamid Nasir Chattha, which was attended by the leaders of all the factions.

Sultan Mehmood Khan, acting president of the PML(F), told Dawn that it had been decided that a new general council would be elected by a joint council meeting that would consequently elect all other office-bearers as Pir Pagara had accepted Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as president of the unified league.

He, however, said his party's reservations about appointment of its nominees as secretary-general and senior vice-president cum-chief organizer continued and would be raised at an appropriate time.

Those who attended the meeting included S.M. Zafar, Hamid Nasir Chattha, Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, Imtiaz Sheikh, Ejazul Haq, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Khan, Tariq Azeem, Mushahid Hussain Syed, Gen (retired) Majeed Malik, Saeed Minhas, Kamil Ali Agha, Dilawar Abbas, Kunwar Qutubuddin Khan, Iqbal Dar and Rana Nazir.

The meeting decided to convene the general councils of the respective parties between May 5 and 20 to approve the new draft constitution as well as to remove prefixes with their factions to pave the way for the election of a new unified general council.

PML(Q) secretary information Tariq Azim said it had been decided that the constitution committee under the head of S.M. Zafar and consisting of Hamid Nasir Chattha, Tariq Azim, Syed Kamil Ali Agha, Sultan Mehmud Khan, Intikhab Khan and Shamimuddin, would prepare a consensus constitution which would be put before their respective general councils for approval.

The constitution committee, he added, would meet at his residence on Wednesday and would prepare the new draft based on Q-league constitution which would be handed over to Chaudhry Shujaat for approval.
