APNS decides to file petitions in high courts

KARACHI, April 12: The Wage Board Committee of the All- Pakistan Newspapers Society met on Monday in Karachi under APNS president Arif Nizami to consider available remedies arising out of the short order of the Supreme Court passed in the APNS constitutional petition wherein the court had dismissed the petition as not maintainable under Article 184(3) and stated that petitioners may avail appropriate remedy before a competent forum.

The committee discussed its further strategy to be adopted by Executive Committee and observed that government should be urged upon to repeal the Newspapers Employees Act, 1973, so as to allow the newspaper industry to act in accordance with the dynamics of market forces.

The committee was apprised of the talks, APNS had held in the pact with Ministry of Information and Ministry of Labour in this respect. After discussion, it was decided to avail and file constitutional petitions before the respective high courts of the provinces to seek legal remedy to protect the newspaper industry from financial crisis accruing under the 7th Wage Board Award. -PPI
