HYDERABAD, April 7: City Taluka Nazim Moinuddin Shaikh has demanded that the EDO, works and services, should be removed and an inquiry be initiated against him for his alleged involvement in corruption.
Speaking at a press conference at his office here on Wednesday, he accused EDO Habibur Rehman Memon of awarding contracts to companies owned by his relatives. He said that the EDO had delayed construction of a drain on the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Road in union council-3 for more than two years on different pretexts.
He said that the contract for the drain was advertized for Rs3.7 million for the second time as the first contractor had left the work halfway. He said that tenders were invited in November 2003 and then in January and February 2004 but the EDO cancelled the tenders on pretexts of increase in prices of iron and that the matter had been sent to the Sindh government for permission.
LECTURE: Federal Minister Mehmud Ali has called upon youths to play their role in the development of the country, reports Our Bureau. He was delivering a lecture on "Stability of Democracy Depends on Creation of Awareness of Democratic Behaviour Amongst the People" organized by the department of political science, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, on Wednesday.
The minister said that it was time that youths studied lives of great people and their role in the creation and development of the country. He advised students and scholars to create awareness among the masses about importance of democracy.
He said that in Pakistan democratic culture could not take roots due to non-participation of the common man in the democratic process. Mr Ali said that general election could not be held for two years even after the country got its first constitution in 1956.
Referring to the Ayoob Khan regime, the minister said that due to continuous martial law, different institutions in the country had destabilized. Speaking on the occasion, Sindh University vice-chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui advised students to study the history of Pakistan critically and learn lessons from it.
The chairman, department of political science, Prof Iqbal Ahmad Qureshi, also expressed spoke on the occasion.
BONDED PEASANTS: Sindhi Hari Tehrik President Ali Nawaz Dahiri has said that several peasants have been imprisoned in the private jails of landlords. Speaking at the central committee meeting of the party here on Tuesday, he said jobless people were forced to commit suicides due to price hike. The meeting rejected the construction of greater Thal canal and Kalabagh dam.
