KARACHI: Facilities at resettlement project reviewed


KARACHI, April 6: Rehabilitation project for shiftees of Lyari Expressway is the only project of its kind in the history of Pakistan whereby the people settled at the banks of Lyari river are shifted from an unhygienic environment to newly-developed settlements with the combined efforts of the federal and Sindh governments.

This was stated by additional chief secretary, planning and development, Ghulam Sarwar Khehro, at a briefing during his visit to Taisar Town, the rehabilitation site No 2 of the Lyari Expressway Resettlement scheme here on Tuesday.

He noted that these shiftees are being rehabilitated in an organized and coordinated manner at sites where modern living facilities are being made available with best planning.

He said the speed with which the people are shifting to Taisar Town in the second phase of their rehabilitation deserve every appreciation. Mr Khehro said various social welfare projects be prepared for this project of rehabilitation and for this, the Sindh government would extend every possible cooperation.

He appreciated that a market had been set up at the site for sale of construction material and where pipes, iron-bars, cement etc are available at less than market price. He went inside the market and talked to shopkeepers. He also visited the newly-constructed primary school, mosque and park.

The ACS development said that the Water Board, the KESC and departments of health and education are making efforts for making the project a success. He emphasised that plans should be prepared keeping the future expansion of abadis and population growth. He called for initiation of tree plantation to make the "Basti" green. He said for this purpose, treated water can be used.

Earlier, Ghulam Sarwar Khehro visited the resettlement site along with Project Director, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha and expressed satisfaction over on-going rehabilitation and development pace.

He was informed about the planning details with the help of charts and graphs. He stressed that schools, hospital, community centre, parks, roads and transport should be completed at a faster pace. -APP
