KARACHI: Lady doctor found dead; two commit suicide

KARACHI, March 31: A lady doctor was killed by unknown persons in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, and her body was found in her home on Wednesday, police said.
Trussed up body of Dr Sumaira Siddiqui, 40, was found in her apartment in Noman Complex, Block-13 D-1, Gulshan-i-Iqbal. Neighbours informed the police about the stench emanating from the place.
Police broke the door and found the two-day old body. "It seemed that the victim was killed after being trussed up, her skull was crushed with a blunt weapon, exposing her brain", a police official said.
The lady doctor used to live alone in the apartment, and we are still waiting for her family to turn up, a duty officer of the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police station, said.
According to the initial investigations, police ruled out the possibility of a dacoity. The lady doctor was living alone in her apartment as she got divorce from her husband a few years back. Police shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
SUICIDE: Two persons committed suicide in separate incidents on Wednesday. A physician suffering from mental illness committed suicide in Gulberg on Wednesday. Capt Dr Sultan Haider, 50, ended his life by cutting an artery of his neck in Gulberg F.B. Area. He was found in a pool of blood, police said.
The victim ended his life after locking himself in his room. The police said that the victim was under psychiatric treatment for his illness. Quoting family sources, police said the victim had twice attempted to commit suicide in the past.
His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. A young woman committed suicide by hanging herself in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Wednesday evening. Police said Fouzia, 24, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her home in Pehlwan goth.
Victim was married to Latif two year back. Police said that some domestic discord was the probable cause behind the suicide. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for postmortem examination.
KILLED: A body found from the Clifton beach late Tuesday night was identified as an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Wednesday. Police said the body was identified as Abdul Latif, 33, a former sector chief of Society area.
They said that body was recovered from the place known as "Do Darya" in the limits of Darakshan police limits. The body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for postmortem examination, where the autopsy report was reserved.
SHELLING: Police on late Tuesday night resorted to tear-gas shelling and aerial firing to disperse a mob demanding release of MMA workers who were earlier arrested on charges of arson in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.
Police said around 100 persons in different vehicles had come to the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station demanding release of two workers of the Muttahida Majlis Amal.
As the mob attempted to attack the police station, the police retaliated by shelling, forcing them to disperse. Police made no arrests, but a case 41/2004 was lodged at the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station.
Earlier, police had picked two workers of MMA for allegedly setting on fire a house belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement during the byelections of the local bodies.
