KARACHI: UC nazims also given funds for uplift, says Naimat

KARACHI, March 30: The city district government and the Sindh government both are working for the progress of Karachi, and union council nazims have also been given funds for development projects.

This was stated by Karachi Nazim Naimatullah Khan while talking to a delegation of nazims from Haripur, NWFP, now here on a study tour. Naimatullah Khan said: "Karachi is Pakistan's biggest commercial and economic city. Its problems are multifarious and resources limited. Still the city government is working on a priority basis to solve these problems."

The nazim said that people approached the MNAs and MPAs for solution of their sewerage, roads and other problems, while under the new system it was the city government which carried out these activities. He said people should approach the nazims with their local problems.

He said: "Our efforts are directed towards attracting maximum foreign investment. ... the city government enjoys full support of President Pervez Musharraf."

Naimatullah Khan said the city government was in search of honest officers for posting on important positions. He declared that he would not tolerate dishonest officers on such positions as only corruption- free organizations and officials could actually serve the people.

Referring to Keamari and Malir towns, he said the city government was carrying out developmental activities in rural areas also. He said the city government's budget was growing every year.

He said the country's 75 per cent revenue was contributed by Karachi and its progress would mean the progress of Pakistan. DCO Mir Hussain Ali and EDO Raisuddin Paracha, briefed the delegation on the city government projects and its administrative structure.

The delegation was led by Union Council Nazim Aslam Khan. He praised the services of Naimatullah Khan as the city nazim. The delegation members extended felicitations to Karachiites for having a Nazim like Naimatullah Khan. The delegation invited the Karachi nazim to visit Haripur.

WATER CONNECTION: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Tuesday said that illegal commercial water connections in Mahmoodabad would be removed whereas domestic water connections of the area would be regularized.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Al-Farooq School, he said the provision of water to Mahmoodabad would be included in Karachi Development Package which was facing an acute shortage of water.

"Rs13 billion out of the Rs29 billion in the KDP has been earmarked for overcoming shortage of water and to upgrade sewerage system of the city," he said. - APP/PPI
