HYDERABAD, March 29: A World Bank team has recently inspected some sites on the bank of the Akram Wah where unauthorized pipes were sealed two months back.
The team comprised WB senior water resources specialist Manuel Contijoch, irrigation adviser Salah Daroghoth and Mr Azad of the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority chairman Abdul Haq, managing director Professor Aijaz Ahmad Qureshi, Left Bank Canal Area Water Board director Nazeer Ahmad Mughal and other officials accompanied the World Bank team.
A spokesman for Sida in a statement issued here the other day said the World Bank team was informed that 175 cusecs of water was saved and was now being supplied to tail-end areas after 46 unauthorized pipes along the Akram Wah from head to tail (RD-0 to 378) were closed in a campaign launched by area water board officials.
The team was also informed that electricity supply to 25 oversized lift machines running along the Wah was also disconnected during the campaign. It was told that influential people of the area had been running the illegal pipes and oversized lift machines.
Earlier, the WB team members were briefed by the area water board director at his office in Badin about various aspects of the board like its composition and activities.
