HYDERABAD: Teachers to continue protest

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 29: The All Sindh Primary Teachers Association has announced that 100,000 teachers will hold a protest demonstration in the city on April 17, besides staging a sit-in, if their demands are not accepted.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the 25-member working committee of the association held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of central president Mohammad Rafique Jarwar. The committee also authorized central office bearers to announce measures for promoting the teachers' demands.

It appointed Syed Ghalib Hussain Shah central secretary- general of the association who was administered oath of his office by the association president.

Criticizing misbehaviour of the Sujawal taluka police officer with the teachers, the committee demanded that he should be suspended and false cases registered against the teachers of Sujawal taluka should be withdrawn.

SPLA PROTEST: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association has said it is not prepared to rely on press statements while making it clear that college teachers will not call off their protest unless a notification is issued about the acceptance of their demands.

SPLA central president Professor Riaz Ahsan, secretary- general Agha Khalid Pathan, presidents of the Karachi and Hyderabad regions and others said promotions under the four-tier formula as well as promotions of librarians and physical education directors were not the only problems.

They said in a meeting between the SPLA leaders and the education minister, it was decided that the problems of the teachers would be resolved in a week but no notification was issued so far.

They said restoration of teaching allowance of the Dadu district teachers, reinstatement of the Thatta district teachers, withdrawal of transfer orders of the Tando Adam girls' college lecturers and other problems were also placed before the minister, but not a single problem was resolved.

Therefore, they said, the college teachers would continue protest movement till the acceptance of their demands.
