GUJRANWALA: Naib Nazim among 12 held

GUJRANWALA, March 28: As many as 12 men of two groups, including a Naib Nazim, were arrested by Naushera Virkan police for an exchange of fire here on Sunday. A passerby was injured in firing.

Following a quarrel, two rival groups led by Mian Shafiq and Waris opened fire on each other. A passerby, Abdul Hamid, sustained bullet injuries and was taken to hospital. The police reached the spot and arrested some 12 men of both the groups, including Naib Nazim Mohammad Nasir.

MURDERED: A man was killed allegedly by his friend over a money dispute in Kamoki on Sunday. Zahid had given a loan of Rs75,000 to Tausif a year ago. When he demanded his money back, Tausif gave him a cheque which was dishonoured by the bank. On Sunday, Zahid went to Tausif's house and fired at him after an exchange of hot words. The injured was taken to the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, where he succumbed to his injuries.

US DELEGATES: A two-member delegation of US consulate, led by public affairs officer Rex Moser, visited the Saddar tehsil municipal administration office and reviewed the local government system on Sunday.

The Saddar tehsil council Nazim, Capt Mubashar Ahmad Cheema (retired), briefed the delegation on the functioning of the departments. He said the problems of people were being solved at their doorsteps.

He said the income of the tehsil council had reached up to Rs90.15 million. A sum of Rs43 million was being spent on the construction of uplift projects while Rs31 million had been allocated to citizen community boards to complete various development schemes, he added.

Later, the delegates visited the Haji Murad Eye Hospital and reviewed provision of facilities to patients. They also met Punjab Food Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal and exchanged views on bilateral issues.

SUICIDE: A jobless youth committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in Tiba Mohammadnagar, Kamoki, on Sunday. Tariq took poison when his parents admonished him for demanding pocket money. He was taken to the local DHQ Hospital where he died.
