SUKKUR, March 26: Sixty-five rice mills in Kandhkot, Ghouspur, Karampur, Tangwani and Buxapur observed strike on the second consecutive day on Friday against a tax levied by the market committee on the transportation of rice.

More than 2,000 labourers remained without work due to the strike. Grain Market president Nand Lal and Rice Mills Association president Noor Khoso said officials of the market committee charged Rs500 per trawler and tractor trolley which was illegal and unjust.

They said they had no objection if they charged the tax from the vehicles bringing rice to their mills. They alleged the market committee officials charged tax from their vehicles at three different places. They said if the practice prevailed then they would continue the strike.

The market committee contractor Baldev Kumar said the tax was charged from the grain merchants and rice mill owners according to the schedule issued by the Sindh government.
