Six die in Kashmir gunfight

SRINAGAR, March 23: Five freedom fighters and an Indian soldier were killed in a fierce all-night gunfight in a dense jungle area of Kashmir, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

He said the fighting broke out late Monday in Wuyan near Bandipora, 60 kilometres north of Srinagar when Indian troops moved in on a tip-off of a rebel presence. Three other soldiers were injured, he said, adding that troops recovered five assault rifles and 20 kilograms of RDX explosives. -AFP
