ISLAMABAD, March 23: The opposition members of the Democratic Alliance have submitted an adjournment motion to the Senate Secretariat to discuss new security plan for the Capital, sources told Dawn here on Tuesday.
The sources said four opposition members had submitted an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the security arrangements in the Capital city causing inconvenience to the commuters and residents of the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The motion has been signed by leader of the parliamentary group of the People's Party Parliamentarians (PPP) in the Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani, PPP senators Sajjad Bukhari and Dr Safdar Abbassi and Balochistan National Party (BNP) Senator Sanaullah Baloch.
Through the motion, the opposition senators have drawn the attention of the upper House towards the reports that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) was planning to install close circuit video cameras at different public places.
According to the reports, the cameras are being installed at a cost of Rs3.3 million under a new security plan to monitor vehicular movement. The sources in the opposition told Dawn that the motion had been moved to highlight the failure of the government in maintaining law and order situation despite spending huge amount for this purpose. Moreover, they said, the so-called security steps were constantly causing inconvenience to the visitors and the residents of the Capital.
They said the crime rate in the Capital was increasing constantly, which showed that the government had completely failed to protect the life and property of residents. "If this is the state of law and order situation in the Capital then what will be the fate of the people living in other parts of the country", said an opposition senator.
Meanwhile, PPP Dr Safdar Ali Abbasi has also submitted a call attention notice to the Senate Secretariat regarding deforestation being taken place in the Capital. The notice states: "The attention of the minister for interior is drawn towards the fact that extensive deforestation has taken place in Islamabad and the city is presenting a barren look."
Under the rules, the interior minister will give answers to various questions to be raised by the members when the call attention notice will come on the agenda of the House proceedings.
