KHAIRPUR, March 19: District Nazim Nafisa Shah has said that two women candidates, Ms Shahil and Ms Hidayat, for councillor seats in by-election are missing in Sobhodero taluka.
Speaking at a training seminar held by the Aurat Foundation on Friday, Ms Shah said feudal elements were opposing elected representatives and democratic institutions.
She said Nazims in the district including herself were insecure. Ms Shah said though a parliament existed but it was only in the name. She said bureaucrats consider themselves above democracy and they supported undemocratic forces.
Ms Shah said in by-elections feudal lords would decide as to who should win and there was no importance to popular will. Khadim Mirani, Hina Siddiqui, Niaz Khaskheli and others also spoke on the occasion.
WATER ROTATION: Following a shortage of water in the Indus river rotation is observed in Mirwah canal and Abul Wah. In Mirwah canal water flow was 7-8 feet on Thursday but it was reduced to 5 feet on Friday. Rotation is observed in Abul Wah from March 18 which would continue till March 26.
DEMO: Residents of the town held a demonstration against insanitation here on Friday on the second consecutive day of their protest. They demanded that dirty areas of the town should be cleaned immediately. They said in many colonies sewerage water had entered houses.
Employees of the taluka municipal administration took out a procession against the administration for non-payment of their salaries since last two months.
SEMINAR: Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed has said national security lies in the rule of law, respect for constitution and human rights, spread of education and improvement in economy.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day national conference on "Post 9/11 World and Pakistan's Foreign Policy: Challenges and Responsibilities" at the Shah Abdul Latif University here the other day.
He said Pakistan should adopt long-term policies to strengthen parliament as it was the base of foreign policy of the country. The senator said the 9/11 incident had changed foreign policies of countries.
He claimed that US President George Bush and Osama bin Laden had good relations and Al-Qaeda or Taliban were not involved in the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon. He also condemned the invasion of Iraq. Former ISI chief Hameed Gul warned the US was currently focusing on Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya.
