Sindh PA session begins today

By Habib Khan Ghori

KARACHI, March 18: A heated debate on the law and order situation, especially against the backdrop of recent murder of PPP MPA Abdullah Murad, is likely to be witnessed in the Sindh Assembly which meets here on Friday.

The session has been summoned by Sindh Assembly Speaker Muzaffar Hussain Shah on the requisition filed by the Pakistan People's Party on March 6 to discuss the murder of Abdullah Murad who was gunned down in his constituency Malir.

Besides the murder of MPA Abdullah Murad, the focus of opposition members' speeches would be on the brutal murder of two young girls in Gadap, increase in the kidnapping for ransom cases and the law and order situation in the interior of province where, according to opposition leaders, bandits and anti-social elements have made the life of people miserable.

The opposition is also expected to raise the Shaista Almani case and issues related to the custom of Karo-kari. Initial business for the assembly session is scheduled for four days. However, the session could be extended for a few days if house proceedings remained disciplined, it is learnt.

The government business to be brought forward includes introduction of two bills, laying of two ordinances and a request to extend time for preparing reports on privilege motions.

Parliamentary party of the ruling coalition met at the Chief Minister's House on Thursday with leader of the house Sardar Ali Mohammad Mahar in the chair.

The meeting, attended by about 40 members and lasted for over half-an-hour, chalked out a strategy for tomorrow's session. According to the circles close to the ruling coalition, the chief minister emphasized the need for showing patience and tolerance. The treasury members were advised not to lose patience in the face of protest walkouts and fiery speeches of opposition members as the issue was sensitive.

He also asked them to be cautious in responding to the speeches of opposition members. Parliamentary party of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal will meet on Friday at 9am at the assembly chamber to formulate its strategy.

PPP parliamentary party was in session at the residence of its leader Nisar Ahmed Khuhro at the time of filing this report. The session has been summoned by Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah on the PPP requisition under Article 54(3) read with Article 127 of the Constitution.
