KARACHI: Prof Sarwar J. Zuberi passes away

KARACHI, March 17: Prof Sarwar Jehan Zuberi, a well-known specialist and editor of the Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA) for more than 30 years, died here on Wednesday morning.

Prof Zuberi graduated from the Dow Medical College in 1956, securing a position in the professional examinations. After doing her house-job at the JPMC under the guidance of Dr Mazhar Hussain Shah, she proceeded to England and then to the US and worked at the prestigious Lahey Clinic there.

She returned to Pakistan in 1967 and practically devoted her life to research. She had more than 100 publications to her credit. Prof Zuberi was an active member of the International Society of Hepatologists. She was Scientist Emeritus and director of the Pakistan Medical and Research Council.

She was given the FRCP by Royal College of Edinburgh. She was also the founder and active member of The Kidney Foundation. The late professor is known for her work on Hepatitis in Pakistan and recognized locally and internationally for her work. She was also known for having maintained a record of all her patients very systematically and on a scientific basis.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Wednesday expressed its condolence on the death of Prof Zuberi. Expressing their deep sense of loss, all the office-bearers of the PMA observed that Prof Zuberi was a silent legend who worked day and night for 30 consecutive years, helping the association maintain Pakistan's first internationally-recognized and indexed scientific journal.

"It was extremely painful for all our members in every part of the country that she died because of the 'uneducated' and inefficient healthcare staff in Pakistan," a PMA press release said.

She had developed malaria falciparum following faulty blood transfusion after a successful bilateral knee replacement operation, it added. Prof Zuberi was a life member of the PMA, Karachi, and about two months ago an event had been organized at the PMA House, celebrating her 30 years as the editor of the JPMA. - APP
