KARACHI: CS asks for audit of district govts

KARACHI, March 16: Chief Secretary Dr Mutawakkil Kazi has asked the additional chief secretary of local government and secretary of finance for two-year audit of all district governments in Sindh.

Presiding over a meeting here on Tuesday, he stressed on removal of bottlenecks in the way of maintaining financial discipline. DCOs, being the principal account officers of their respective districts, should adopt the chartered financial procedure and exercise their powers in accordance with the SLGO.

He called for expeditious release of allocated funds to the district governments in order to avoid any disruption in executing development projects. Dr Kazi asked the district governments to plan and establish an 'education city' in their respective districts, selecting a piece of land preferably in central areas.

He ordered inquiries by the Anti-corruption Establishment (ACE) against officials and other employees of the education department in Dadu district for their alleged involvement in embezzlements of millions of rupees as reported by the district's nazim.

The CS asked the ACE chief to see if the case was fit to be referred to the NAB. In the meeting, Dr Kazi also emphasized the need for low-cost housing schemes in every district, and maintained that nazims and DCOs should take personal interest in such schemes. He was confident that the federal government would help in this task. -APP
