Geelani to oppose Indian polls in Kashmir

By Jawed Naqvi

NEW DELHI, March 15: The faction of Kashmir's All Parties Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani said on Monday that it would campaign to oppose Indian parliamentary elections in his homeland scheduled next month.

United News of India quoted a spokesman as saying the decision was taken at a meeting of the Hurriyat constituents under the chairmanship of Mr Geelani. The meeting decided that all the leaders of the breakaway group would visit parts of the state and appeal to the people not to participate in the electoral process.

The meeting decided that the peaceful anti-poll campaign was within the democratic provisions. A spokesman said a six-member team was formed to visit New Delhi and meet diplomats from several countries.

They will apprise the diplomats about the Kashmir situation and the need to resolve the issue peacefully as per the wishes of the people.
