KARACHI: KESC's campaign

Published March 15, 2004

KARACHI, March 14: On the instructions of the managing director of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation, Brig Tariq Saddozai, the power utility has launched a new connection drive in Millat Garden Malir where legal connections will be provided at subsidized rates to replace illegal Kundas, said a KESC spokesman here on Sunday.

For this purpose, a mobile new connection office in the area has started functioning to provide new connections to the people at their doorsteps. In this locality consisting of 80, 120, and 200 yards plots and over 200 houses electricity was being used through illegal Kundas for the last one year.

A sizable amount was required to lay power supply lines while the area residents could not afford it. Finally the KESC MD took the initiative and a scheme costing six million rupees was prepared.

It was decided that the KESC would bear 40 per cent cost while the area residents will only pay 60 per cent of the amount. Accordingly the charges have also been reduced which consumers have been allowed to pay in easy instalments. -PPI
