LARKANA: Conservation, research centre at Moenjodaro planned

LARKANA, March 14: The federal ministry of culture and tourism has decided to establish the Moenjodaro Conservation and Research Centre for the preservation of Indus Valley Civilization remains at Moenjodaro.
Talking to this correspondent in Moenjodaro on Sunday, archaeology department director-general Fazaldad Kakar said the body with its office at the site would be headed by a full- time director.
He said the MCRC's nature of working would almost be identical to that of the Moenjodaro Conservation Cell (MCC). He said it would directly function under the department of archaeology as a part of the National Fund for Moenjodaro.
The archaeology DG had arrived at the site with the director of southern region and laboratory experts to prepare a plan for the center. Mr Kakar said the department of archaeology would appoint a director, a geologist, an architect and chemists to effectively undertake the conservation and preservation work at the ancient site.
The MCRC would have a separate center at the site where experts would do extensive documentation of the site, he said and added for that purpose four computers had already arrived there.
The DG visited the offices for the early start of work. A Unesco team comprising eight experts would also be arriving at Moenjodaro on Monday. The team would stay at the site for 10 days and finalize the project in coordination with the department of archaeology and the district government.
The DG said the preliminary plan had already been prepared and sent to the ministry. He did not comment on the underground water table level which caused damages to structures.
Union council Moenjodaro Nazim Mohib Pirzado met the DG and proposed to him that funds should be deposited with the local branch of the National Bank of Pakistan.
District Nazim Khursheed Junejo had contacted the federal secretary, culture and tourism, Khalid Lateef, and apprised him about the situation. The secretary had assured of all out efforts in looking after the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization in Moenjodaro.
EXAMS: The second paper of Secondary School Certificate was held in the jurisdiction of the Larkana Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education in a peaceful manner.
District administrations of Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur and Dadu had made security arrangements for the examinations. Headmasters, private school teachers, revenue and health staff and NGO activists worked as invigilators in the wake of boycott by the Government Secondary Teachers' Association.
Talking to this correspondent, the controller of examinations of the BISE, Larkana, Professor Rabnawaz Tunio, said the paper was held in 95 examination centres in the board jurisdiction.
