Haas outclasses Enqvist

INDIAN WELLS, March 13: Former World No. 2 Tommy Haas, who missed all of last season with an injury, beat Sweden's Thomas Enqvist 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on Friday in the opening round of the US$4.9m ATP/WTA Indian Wells Masters Series event.

The 25-year-old German faced the toughest test of his 2004 comeback against fellow wild card Enqvist.

It was Haas' first win of 2004 after a pair of first-round losses in San Jose and Memphis.

Haas missed 2003 after undergoing two shoulder operations in the past 14 months. He said the rotator-cuff surgery was a success and he's looking forward to the challenge.

Haas, who has five career ATP titles, books a date in the second round with tenth seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand.

Spain's Gala Leon Garcia became the first women to reach the third round, beating a struggling ninth seed Jelena Dokic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

She was joined in the third round by Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi who stopped 14-year-old Russian sensation Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-0.
