LAHORE: Ijaz Batalvi laid to rest

LAHORE, March 9: Noted jurist and litterateur Ijaz Batalvi was laid to rest at the Model Town G-Block graveyard on Tuesday in the presence of a large number of people from all walks of life.

The mourners included judges of the Supreme Court and the Lahore High Court, lawyers, literati and his friends. The funeral was taken out from his residence at 73-Shadman and prayers were offered at a mosque nearby after which his body was taken for burial to Model Town.

Former chief justice of Pakistan Irshad Hasan Khan, former CJ of the Lahore High Court Mian Mahboob Ahmad, former Supreme Court judge Mr A S Salam, Senator Lateef Khan Khosa, advocate-general Syed Shabbar Raza Razvi and writer Amjad Islam Amjad were prominent among those present. Qul will be held at 83-F, Model Town, at 5.30pm today (Wednesday).

S M ZAFAR: Former federal law minister S M Zafar condoled the death of Ijaz Batalvi, a close friend, and said it was a personal loss.

Talking to Dawn on Tuesday, he said Mr Batalvi was a leading lawyer who could bring the facts of a case close to the reality of life. "Had there been a jury system in the country, Mr Batalvi would have reached the new heights of fame as a lawyer."

Mr Zafar said the deceased was also a quality writer among those who founded a literary movement soon after independence. His contribution to literature was second to none, he added.
