Play without fear of defeat, advises Imran
By Our Sports Correspondent
LAHORE, Feb 29: The Indian cricketers do look strong on paper but if the Pakistanis play without any fear of defeat, they canturn the tables on them, said former Test captain and cricket legend Imran Khan on Sunday.
Talking to journalists after a 40-minute closed-door meeting with the probables, at the National Cricket Academy, aimed at equipping them with valuable tips before they take on India, Imran said aggressive and positive cricket were keys to Pakistan's success.
"Don't be panicky. Play your own game setting aside allkind of pressures," he said adding that the negative attitude anddefensive play to avoid defeat would be harmful.
Imran said that the Indians were in good form as they were coming here after playing a tough series against Australia. Their batting is strong and it will play vital role in the one-day series, he said.
The captain of Pakistan team who won the 1992World Cup, once again called Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami two formidable fast bowlers. "If Shoaib remained fit he will be the real difference between the two sides while Sami is most impressive in the upcoming lot of pace bowlers."
He said Pakistan were tougher than the India, which visited Pakistan last time in 1989, but this time they had an edge. Imran supported Pakistan coach Javed Miandad's stand that the team do not need any trainer, though the chief selector Wasim Bari thinks otherwise. "It is the prime duty of players to care about their training themselves as no one from abroad can train them. I was used to train me myself and the same goes for others," he said.
Still, if there is any need to get training Pakistan has some specialist trainers who can apprise the team of the way they should train themselves, but after all it is the player who has to do it himself, Imran stressed.
To a question about the Indians' security concerns, Imran said that security was not an issue but it got too much publicity. "Let me assure the Indians that nothing wrong will happen (to them) here." Imran discussed strategy for the series with Javed Miandad and also paid a visit to the indoor stadium of NCA.
The PCB had invited Imran to guide probables, in connection with its efforts to prepare them for Indian series. Another legend Wasim Akram will also visit the training camp in near future. Besides Miandad, team manager Haroon Rasheed, chief selector Wasim Bari and the PCB chief executive Ramiz Raja were also present in the meeting.
