NAWABSHAH, Feb 29: Police arrested six Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz activists in Sakrand on Sunday and booked 56 others, including the JSQM chairman and vice-chairman, under anti-terrorism laws.
The arrests and registration of case followed a sit-in staged by the JSQM activists in Sakrand on Saturday to protest against the Kalabagh dam and greater Thal canal projects.
Sakrand SHO Abdul Latif Dahri registered the FIR on behalf of the state under section 7, Anti-Terrorism Act, and sections 353, 342, 147, 149 and 504, PPC, for staging the sit-in and resorting to violence.
Those nominated in the FIR included JSQM chairman Bashir Qureshi, vice-chairman Abdul Wahid Arisar, Niaz Kalani, Taj Joyo, Arbab Ali, Ghulam Rasool Chandio, Manzoor Memon, Mohammad Khalil Khaskheli, Anwar Ali Shah, Hafiz Abdul Qayoom Channa, Gul Morio, Qamar Bhatti and Ali Gul Keerio of Pakistan People's Party (SB.)
Those arrested were identified as Rajab Ali Jalbani, Arbelo Rind, Aijaz Ali Rind, Mohammad Sharif Lakho, Mohammad Sharif Vistro and Mashooq Ali Solangi. Meanwhile, Major Ahsan lodged an FIR at the Sakrand police station under sections 147, 148, 342 and 427, PPC, stating therein that some unidentified men attacked their jeep at the Sakrand bypass while they were on the way to Hyderabad.
SECURITY: The Nawabshah police have adopted security measures and constituted special teams to ensure maintaining of law and order on ninth and 10th Muharram.
Heavy police contingents have been deployed in sensitive areas, including imam bargahs, to avoid any untoward incident.
KILLED: Fifteen-year-old Abdullah was killed when a trailer (JT-3845) hit his cycle on the National Highway in Daulatpur on Sunday. The driver escaped. Meanwhile, three armed men deprived Juma Khan Jalbani of his motorcycle on the Sath Meel road in the Daur area.
HUNGER STRIKE: Members of the Shaheed Javed Haider Shah Welfare Association observed a token hunger strike against the open sale of drugs in the town outside the press club the other day.
The association president Anwar Abbasi said drugs like charas, heroin and opium were sold openly in connivance with the police in Taj Colony, Mariam road, Jam Sahib road and Lakho village. They demanded that the district Nazim and DPO should take necessary steps to stop the business of drugs.
