86 released in held Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Feb 27: Some 86 Muslims jailed under India's tough anti-terror law have been released by the authorities in occupied Kashmir since the new government took charge 15 months ago, a senior minister claimed on Friday.

The government of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has not invoked the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), which offers death for even possessing explosives, since coming to power through historic elections in September-October 2002, state home minister Abdul Rehman Veeri said.

He said the previous government had arrested 168 people under the draconian law. -AFP
