KARACHI: Operation of illegal hydrants banned - Underpasses planned


KARACHI, Feb 26: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has imposed Section 144 on the operation of illegal hydrant at Nishtar Road in Jamshed Town. The nazim has received a report that contaminated water is being supplied from this hydrant , and water leaking from this outlet has also damaged the roads in the town and other parts of the city.

Besides, in order to check growing accidents, the nazim has extended the ban on entry of heavy vehicles into the city for another seven days. The ban on entry of heavy vehicles will be from 7-9 a.m. and from 6-8 p.m.

The city mazim has also extended the ban by seven days on lifting of reti-bajri from the limits of Karachi, while the ban on bathing in the sea afflicted by oil leak from Tasman Spirit, fish netting and its sale and preparation of chicken feed from marine species has also been extended by seven day.

UNDERPASSES: In order to manage the city's traffic on modern lines, the city government has decided to lay a network of flyovers and underpasses in the city.

In the first phase of this plan, the first underpass will be constructed near Hotel Mehran, second near Hotel Crown Plaza and third at Habib Ebrahim Rehmatoola Road at Karsaz at Sharea Faisal.

The second phase envisages the construction of underpasses at Sohrab Goth, Hasan Square, Shah Suleman Road and I.I. Chundrigar Road, besides construction of flyovers.

The city government has allocated Rs2 billion out of Taameer-i-Karachi programme for the purpose. In view of the reconstruction of important thoroughfares, the CDGK has asked the department concerned to make plans for alternative roads.

The CDGK sources said that before the end of fiscal 2003-04, the work on University Road, Jail Chowrangi to Safoora Goth Road, Jehangir Road and Shahrah-e-Orangi, which come under its control, will start soon after completion of tendering process.

In order to ensure the construction of durable roads as per standard specifications under Taameer-i-Karachi programme, the city government will hold the contractor responsible for GIS Base Consultancy, time period and plan preparation. -APP
