Pakistan and England move into semifinals

DHAKA, Feb 25: Pakistan and England became the first teams to qualify for the semifinals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup after recording their second victories in the Super League round on Wednesday.

The two winners face each other at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium on Friday to decide who finish on top of Group-II. The remaining two places for the last four stage will be settled on Thursday when Group-I contestants play. Sri Lanka, India, West Indies and South Africa are all in contention.

Pakistan, helped by a century partnership between skipper Khalid Latif and Adnan Zaheer, made light work of New Zealand by a margin of eight wickets in the day/night fixture at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Khalid hit 15 fours and one six in making 90 off 86 balls while Adnan remained unbeaten with 72 off 93 deliveries. He struck 12 boundaries. The pair added 123 for the second wicket. Pakistan needed just 34.2 overs to overhaul New Zealand's total of 181.

England owed their victory to captain Alastair Cook, who slammed his second straight undefeated century to marshal his side to a six-wicket over Zimbabwe at the Bangladesh Sports Institute.

The left-handed opener Cook, who made 108 against New Zealand on Monday, stroked 10 boundaries in his 131-ball knock of 108. Luke Wright contributed 79 off 96 balls while dominating the fourth wicket stand of 128 with Cook.

Zimbabwe were curtailed to 218 for nine in their allotted 50 overs. Bangladesh, the hosts, moved into the semifinals of the Plate Championship along with Ireland after both minnows won their respective matches on Wednesday.
