Venus returns with win as Capriati crashes

DUBAI, Feb 25: Venus Williams bounced back from injury with a straight sets win over Australian No 1 Alicia Molik at the 585,000-euro WTA Dubai Open here Wednesday , as fellow American Jennifer Capriati lost her comeback match against Greece's Eleni Daniilidou.

Williams, the second seed, was the recipient of a first round bye and came away a 6-3, 6-4 winner in her second round tie against unseeded Molik. Williams next meets the winner of the tie between Russian teenager Svetlana Kuznetsova and Germany's Anca Barna for a place in the semi-finals.

But Capriati, another former world number one who has been sidelined for three months with a back injury, was not so fortunate and was beaten in her first match to former top 20 player Daniilidou.

Capriati, who was seeded third and had hoped to earn herself a semi-final on Friday with Williams, was beaten 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) in a wind-affected match.
