Govt must enforce Shariat: Sami

Published February 25, 2004

HARIPUR, Feb 24: The provincial government must honour its commitment and immediately enforce Shariat in the Frontier province, says Senator Maulana Samiul Haq.

He said this while talking with newsmen here on Sunday night. Deputy speaker of the NWFP Assembly Ikramullah Shahid was also present on the occasion. Maulana Sami said that differences between his party and other parties comprising the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal had surfaced when they deviated from their commitment of enforcing Islam in the province.

He said that the provincial government should not hesitate just for the sake of prolonging its tenure. Expressing satisfaction over the attitude of other parties in the alliance, Maulana Sami said that his party had not formally decided to part ways with the MMA and would only do so if they failed to mend their ways.

Referring to the Kashmir issue, the Maulana expressed reservation about the possibility of a positive outcome of the recently-initiated Pakistan-India dialogue, saying that the process would not succeed as it was not compatible with the wishes of the people of Kashmir.

He also oppose what he termed the US agenda for what he called a division of Kashmir on the pattern of Israel. Maulana Samiul Haq stressed the need for unity among the people, saying it was vital to protect the country's sovereignty.
