SUKKUR: 4 dists declared sensitive areas

By Our Correspondent

SUKKUR, Feb 22: Sindh police chief Syed Kamal Shah has said Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur and Khairpur districts have been declared sensitive in the wake of Muharram.

Presiding over a meeting held here on Sunday to review law and order situation in the area, he said army could be called to maintain peace in the districts during Muharram.

He said army had also been placed on high alert in some other districts but it would be summoned only when the police and Rangers could not cope up with law and order situation.

He said meetings had also been held with Shia and Sunni Ulema who had given an assurance law and order would be maintained during the month and they would cooperate with law-enforcing agencies in this regard.

Mr Shah said the Sindh government had installed modern equipment and cameras to curb terrorist activities during mourning processions and Majalis. He added additional force would be deployed on routes of processions and venues of Majalis.

Answering a question, he said no report of any subversive activity had been received so far, adding all possible arrangements had been made to face any untoward situation.

He said parking of cars and motorcycles near mosques and Imambargahs would not be allowed and parking places would be provided to the people coming there. Replying to another question, he said the police had been ordered to search suspected areas, including hotels and hostels, to make sure no terrorists were residing there.

The police chief said steps taken by the Sindh police regarding the busting of a terrorist network had started yielding positive results. About Sindh-Balochistan border area, Mr Shah claimed the situation had improved there and construction work of three more police stations and 25 checkposts in the area was continuing in full swing.
