Enqvist ousts top seed Roddick

MEMPHIS: Sweden's Thomas Enqvist ousted top seed Andy Roddick 7-6 6-3 to reach the semifinals of the Kroger St Jude tournament in Memphis on Friday night.

Roddick, who woke in the morning suffering from back spasms, received treatment throughout the day before taking to the court.

Enqvist will now meet German Nicolas Kiefer for a place in Sunday's final of the $690,000 indoor event.

Earlier in the day, Enqvist's fellow Swede Joachim Johansson reached his first ATP semi-final, where he will face second seed Mardy Fish, who was taken to three sets by Dmitry Tursunov in his quarter-final.

The 29-year-old, ranked 80th in the world, saved a set point in the first set tiebreak and broke Roddick's serve to lead 3-1 in the second before clinching victory on his fifth match point.

clijsters in semis

ANTWERP: Belgian Kim Clijsters eased past Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria 7-6 6-2 to reach the Antwerp Diamond Games semifinals on Friday.

World number two Clijsters struggled in the first set, which she took 7-2 in a tiebreak, before finding her form to ease through the second for the loss of just two games.

Earlier, fifth-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder was forced to retire with a groin strain in her quarter-final against Italy's Silvia Farina Elia.

Hewitt ROUTs Henman

ROTTERDAM: Lleyton Hewitt effectively shut down the big game of Tim Henman, reaching his second final of the season Saturday with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Tim Henman at the 842,000-euro Rotterdam event.

Sixth seed Hewitt, winner of the title at Sydney in January, stretched his career domination over the Briton to seven victories without a loss. He will play for the title at the Ahoy stadium Sunday against the winner from Juan Carlos Ferrero and Max Mirnyi of Belarus.-Reuters
