Baton-charge on traders: PPP submits motion

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Feb 18: The People's Party Parliamentarians (PPP) has submitted an adjournment motion to the National Assembly secretariat to discuss the incident of traders-police clash at Aabpara Market , parliamentary secretary of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Izhar Amrohvi told Dawn on Wednesday.

Mr Amrohvi said MNAs Naheed Khan and Raja Pervez Ashraf had submitted the motion under rule 91 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly.

He said they had sought a discussion on the clash which took place on February 16, in which, according to press reports, 19 traders received injuries. The police arrested about 60 traders, who were released the next day after negotiation with the city administration.

The police, he added, used massive tear-gas to disperse the protesting traders which caused great inconvenience and difficulties for the commuters.

The PPP MNAs stated that the incident had caused "serious concern" among the public and needed immediate discussion after adjournment of the normal proceedings.
