EU offers to help push peace process
By Shadaba Islam
BRUSSELS, Feb 16: The European Union on Monday voiced full support for the start of India-Pakistan talks, saying the EU was ready to help the process of reconciliation between the two countries.
In a statement, EU's foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana said he welcomed "personal engagement" of President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to try and solve all bilateral issues through peaceful means.
"The start of the 'composite dialogue' in Islamabad is an important and concrete step in the process of normalization of relations between India and Pakistan," said Mr Solana.
He hoped that both sides would make all efforts to forward the process, including the consolidation of ceasefire and re-opening of communication links on all levels. "I encourage both sides to continue confidence-building measures," he said.
