BADIN, Feb 16: The menace of adulteration in food items and drinks being sold here remains unchecked due to the apathy of taluka municipal authorities and local administration.

People have complained that the authorities have not taken any action in the matter. A survey conducted by this correspondent on Sunday revealed that no pure milk was available in the town as there was more than 60 per cent water in milk. Flour, chilli powder and other commodities were also found adulterated.

There is no food inspector in the municipal town to collect samples of food items though under the West Pakistan Pure Food Rules, 1965, one food inspector is to be posted for a population of 10,000. Under these laws, at least 13 food inspectors are required to be appointed in Badin municipal limits.

The Sindh Local Government Ordinance, 2001, also calls for action against contamination of food and drinks. Under the ordinance, supply of contaminated potable water, adulteration, neglect in safe storage, manufacturing and marketing substandard foods and drinks are punishable offences.
