Proposal to create more provinces rejected
By Our Correspondent
LARKANA, Feb 13: PPP Sindh's president Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on Friday rejected Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali's proposal to grant divisions the status of provinces
, saying the move was constitutionally not permissible, adding that the proposal was economically unviable as there was no infrastructure to support such a move.
He was speaking with journalists at his residence and at a protest camp here on Friday. Referring to the nuclear imbroglio, Mr Khuhro said President Gen Pervez Musharraf, Gen (retd) Aslam Beg, Gen (retd) Jahnagir Karamat and former President Farooque Leghari should be "debriefed" by the standing committee on illegal transfer of nuclear secrets.
He said that the anti-greater Thal canal committee would meet in a week or so to streamline their protest strategy. He said that leaders of opposition of all the four provinces would soon meet to assess the situation in this regard.
Referring to expected changes in the top leadership of the PPP, Mr Khuhro said that changes in the party could be made at any time, adding that the "position" he had been assigned was the prerogative of the party's chairperson, Benazir Bhutto. "I am ready and will accept her decision in this context," Mr Khuhro said.
