Motion against NA speaker submitted: Formation of body on water issues

ISLAMABAD, Feb 11: The opposition Democratic Alliance has submitted a privilege motion against National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain to the Senate Secretariat for 'illegally' constituting a parliamentary body on water issues.
Talking to Dawn here on Wednesday, the parliamentary secretary of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Izhar Amrohvi said the motion had been submitted by the opposition members for the second time as earlier a similar motion was killed by Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro.
Mr Amrohvi said the motion had been signed by parliamentary leader of People's Party Parliamentarians (PPP) Mian Raza Rabbani, parliamentary leader of the PML-N Ishaq Dar, PPP Senator Dr Safdar Abbasi and Sanaullah Baloch of the Balochistan National Party.
He said the motion had been filed as the speaker had constituted a joint parliamentary committee on water through a notification instead of elections in total violation of the Constitution.
He said the speaker had violated rules and procedures of the joint sitting by nominating committee members on his own. The ARD secretary said the speaker had breached the privilege of the upper house as the speaker was considered to be a stranger in the Senate and could not appoint any senator as member of any committee.
Mr Amrohvi said the first such motion was also signed by late MMA president Shah Ahmed Noorani and he died minutes before a press conference in which he was about to speak on the issue.
He said after a 'deal' between the government and the MMA on the LFO issue, the ARD and other nationalist parties in the Senate formed the Democratic Alliance as they believed the MMA had become a part of the government.
Mr Amrohvi said the opposition would also raise the issue of Gen Musharraf's security as according to the reports the United States had directly taken the responsibility of his security. He said the government would be asked to clarify the reports regarding appointment of a US lobbyist for Gen Musharraf.
