Committee formed to achieve consensus on police reforms
ISLAMABAD, Feb 10: Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali constituted on Tuesday a committee for achieving consensus on Police Order-2002
, and said his government would accommodate viewpoints of the provincial governments.
Presiding a high-level meeting on the implementation of Police Order-2002 at the Prime Minister's Secretariat, the prime minister said a depoliticised, efficient and effective police institution remained the goal of his government.
The meeting decided to constitute a committee comprising the chief secretaries and IGs of the four provinces in addition to the Chief of Staff to the President and senior officials of the Prime Minister's Secretariat to finalize the proposed amendments and arrive at a consensus draft incorporating the views of the federation as well as the provinces.
He said necessary changes being contemplated in the Police Order-2002 were aimed at depoliticizing the police and making it more effective and workable institution.
In this connection, the support and consensus of the provinces was extremely important to sustain the police reforms, the prime minister said. He further said that the world had changed and there was the need to change the old system, which had failed to deliver.
The government was desirous of making the system efficient, effective and workable for the collective good of the people, he added. Mr Jamali, however, cautioned that while implementing the reforms, legitimate interests of the government servants should not be ignored as it was imperative to provide them a sense of security to protect them from all sorts of manipulations.
He expressed the confidence that the Police Order would create a much better sense of security and protection when implemented with consensus amendments. The prime minister appreciated the desire for achieving consensus on the Police Order-2002, and welcomed the amendments proposed by the provinces. He said his government stood committed to implement the Police Order by arriving at a consensus.
Earlier, the provinces while explaining their position with regard to the Police Order said they were committed to make the system a success by adopting a positive attitude. They said the provincial governments fully subscribed to the concept of the Police Order.
They hoped that the amendments being contemplated by them would be finalized by taking up a consensus position in the best interest of the country and the nation.
