Agro EPZ project reviewed
KARACHI, Feb 7: The development of an Agro Export Processing Zone project was reviewed by Sindh Food Minister Arif Mustafa Jatoi at a meeting here on Saturday.
The project envisages setting up of a central processing centre with satellite collection points in 7 areas throughout Sindh to maximize the export of agricultural products.
Pakistan can earn foreign exchange by exporting value added agricultural commodities to international markets.
The project incorporates the setting up of collection, grading, processing, packing and cold storage facilities.
The minister told the meeting that in first phase these zones would be set up at Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Sakrand, Naushero Feroze and Ghotki.
He said the zones would preferably be set up along the main highway to ensure easy access and smooth transportation of refrigerated containerized cargo.
The meeting was informed that work on main Agro Export Processing Zone at Karachi is nearing completion with entry point to be from the under-construction northern bypass, ensuring easy access to and from Karachi sea and air ports.
The minister directed the officials to ensure completion of this important project within the targeted date.
This project would encourage farmers to adopt to growth of highly value-added crops, improve the processing and grading standards and thus help increase the foreign exchange earnings for the country.-APP
